Any coping skills to deal with extreme saddness (depression) while at work or school or alone in car..etc? — 12 Comments

  1. I wasted alot of my life dealing with this. I take paxil and I couldn’t function without it. My doctor tried different meds and if they don’t work, try another one, best to go to a psychiatrist instead of a GP. Hang in there and don’t give up!

  2. whenever i got depress in high school, i started keeping a small notebook with me of the good thing that happened during the day, or that i remembered. whenever a sad mood would hit, it would only take a few minute of reading “mom packed my lunch today, jessica make milk come out of sam’s nose, we got out of english class 5 minutes early, etc” before i was cheered up a bit. it is a lot harder to stay in those moods when you force yourself to read about happy things in your own life.

  3. I know and understand how hard it is what you’ve been feeling… I’ve been witnessing for the last six years someone in my family going through depression…
I think praying helps a lot; also talking to someone you trust, whether a friend, or family or even a specialist would also help a little…
I believe that exercise helps a lot too, it would make your body and mind feel better.
I hope my suggestions can help at least a little.
I really hope that you get better.

  4. I would first rule out that some medical condition is causing your mood swings. Anxiety and depression can both be caused by medical conditions undiagnosed. Once that is ruled out, establish a more regimented sleep and eating schedule (ensure adequate nutrition because lack of some nutrients can cause upswings and downswings in mood as well as energy). Having social support system can help to talk to someone who understands what you’re going through. Exercise, yoga, deep breathing exercises, meditation, and listening to relaxing music are all ways you can behaviorally and cognitively cope with those feelings. Good luck!

  5. I have the same thing as you do. Whenever I feel like an episode is coming on, i try and think of things that made me happy. I also try different hobbies to keep my mind busy. For example, I am a hands on person and I love animals, so I now volunteer at an animal shelter and do arts and crafts. That has helped me in the past. Hope this helps!

  6. Try keeping a journal to catalog when you feel at your worse. Engage in daily physical activity, the endorphans that you generate will offset the negative chemicals in the brain. Then you may want to look at your diet, increase your vitamin B source if your diet is deficient. Get a good support group and find shared experiences and do fun things like take walks, watch comedies etc. It’s really up to you because if you have the capacity to serve a regular life then chances are you may not be severly depressed, just generally down which is not the same thing. The goals you have will save your life in the long term because you always will have a reason to get up in the morning and something positive to go to bed with at night. Best of luck to you!

  7. Stop resisting it, stop wanting to get away from it. Just feel it.
What you accept totally is transcended.

If you want to talk on this, ask questions, or have me elaborate…. I’ll be on Y! IM

  8. there are so many different combinations of meds out there, don’t rule them all out. find a good doctor you trust and just be open and honest with them, they can refer you to a psychiatrist or try a new combination of meds that will work for you.

i also agree that having someone to talk to would be worth your time. whether it be a friend, councelor, or pastor. dealing with issues such as what you are obviously dealing with can be so much easier if you are willing to share some of your burden with someone else. writing has saved me so many times throughout my life, i feel like i can be totally me and uninhibited when i am writing.

prayer is always at the top of the list, God puts us through trials all the time,,, He is just waiting on you to turn to Him for your answers. just remember that He never gives us more then we can handle.. so hang in there!!
